Rory McGuinty and The Selkie
A Tale of Legend and Myth
Long ago, there lived a grumpy old seafarer on the island of Inishmore off the West Coast of Ireland named Rory McGuinty. Every day he sailed the cold Atlantic sea in search of fish which he brought into port and sold at top price.
One morning, Rory McGuinty, satisfied with his latest cash in at the sales office, shoved his earnings into his coat pocket while contemplating a visit to the local pub. He quickly thought better of it as he glanced up at the dark clouds in the sky that bulged with water.
A storm was coming.
A fisherman all his life, he spent many days alone on the high seas. He sailed with brilliant captains who taught him the fisherman’s trade in his younger years. He sailed through many storms learning to respect the sea and her ways, although, the sea also reminded him of his failures. He thought of his beloved Sarah and how much he had loved her.
Rory walked at a quick pace along the shoreline. As usual, he passed a massive rock formation filled with jagged edges and deep crevices that the waves had carved away over the years. He never paid attention to it, but this time as he passed, he saw something move from within its shadows.
