About Flash Fiction
A Short Story Genre of Fiction
Flash Fiction is a genre of fiction that becomes a very short story. Usually, the story is between 500–1,000 words while short story fiction is longer with a word count that reaches up to 7,000 words or more.
Three Characteristics of Flash Fiction
It’s Short
A complete story is woven into a few paragraphs usually with a final word count of 1,000 words or less.
A Complete Plot
Like any other fiction story, Flash Fiction has a complete plot with a beginning, a middle, and an end. If you have only 1,000 words to get your point across limit adjectives and filler words. Adjectives are used to make the writing sound prettier:
She looked up at the clear blue sky.
She looked up at the sky.
And as a reference, some common filler words are: then, since, about, actually, um, uh, just, right
Surprise
These stories are fun to write and often incorporate a surprise twist at the end which leads the reader to think about the true meaning of the story.
